Training

MFT&E provides a structured program of training and professional development for Maine's fire service. The programs range from basic to advanced level and including training in practical skills to executive development education.
MFT&E's training program is delivered in various formats so that students can select the means that best meets their situation. We design our program around 16-hour modules so that training may be offered in 4, 8, and 16 hour increments to meet local needs. There are four basic delivery formats for our program: local delivery, regional delivery, statewide delivery, and college-based.
Local Community Delivery
Firefighter, driver/operator, and fire officer courses taught by MFT&E instructors at your local fire station or training facility, scheduled for your convenience (weekdays, evenings or weekends), utilizing your apparatus and equipment with emphasis on local conditions and methods.
Regional Fire Academy / Fire Attack School
Firefighter, fire instructor, fire officer, as well as other courses delivered through a partnership of local fire departments, adult education programs, various sponsors, and MFT&E. The courses are taught by certified municipal instructors often with assistance from MFT&E instructors.
Maine State Fire Academy
Firefighter, fire instructor, fire officer, as well as other courses delivered directly by MFT&E working with local partners. The courses are taught by MFT&E instructors with assistance from certified municipal instructors.
Fire Science Degree Program
Classroom based, college-level fire service courses available through Maine's community colleges. These courses are also offered at regional satellite-sites. Completion of all required courses leads to an associate degree in fire science. Learn more about the fire science program at SMCC.
