MFT&E is a department of Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) with statewide responsibility for firefighter training and the legislative authority to issue certification.

Our Mission
The mission of Maine Fire Training & Education is to help make Maine firefighters and citizens safe from fire through proactive prevention, protection and suppression training and education.
What Do We Do?
Revenue for the operation of MFTE is provided from the state general fund, the fire insurance prevention tax (FIPT) and from the federal government grant program managed by FEMA and the National Fire Academy. The funds allow MFTE to offer a limited number of hands-on and classroom-based training at no cost to Maine’s municipal fire–rescue departments.
The free training for volunteer and career municipal fire departments is allocated on an equitable basis by fair distribution.

Courses are performance-based, compliant with federal and state laws and regulations, and national fire training standards. The courses are taught by state certified fire instructors and offered in various formats to meet local needs.
The permanent staff of MFT&E are headquartered at SMCC and have a satellite office on the campus of Eastern Maine Community College. There is a dedicated core of approximately 100 adjunct instructors hired on a per diem basis available to assist your fire department.

Highlights of MFTE’s Training Include:
Certification from the National Fire protection Association (NFPA) Professional Qualifications Board include Fire Fighter (NFPA 1001), Fire Officer (NFPA 1041) and Fire Instructor (NFPA 1021). The Certification Division of MFTE is currently working on a revision to the Pro Board application to include Hazardous Material Operations level (NFPA 472) and Public Safety Telecommunicator levels I & II (NFPA 1061).
The thirty-seven chapters of Jones & Bartlett J & B Pub text “Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills” Second edition are available for delivery as blocks of training that allow for easy training night sessions, weekend blocks and in-house academy training programs based on the needs of the fire community.
The Jones & Bartlett Fire Officer & Fire Instructor “Principles & Practices” courses are offered across Maine to allow fire fighters to continue their education to increase their knowledge and skills and enhance their abilities for promotion and to operate safely as a leader in the fire service.
The Jones & Bartlett course Hazardous Material Operations – Level training program was derived from the “Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills” text based on a request from MFTE. The program requires approximately 32 student contact hours and can be delivered in a format to meet the fire departments needs. The program meets and exceeds the NFPA 472 standard. MFTE is listed as a vendor with the Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) capable to deliver this course qualifying recipients for grant funding to pay for the program.

The Basic Fire School (BFS) program uses material derived from the Jones & Bartlett Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills, Second Edition to meet the demands of the Maine Bureau of Labor BLS requirements for recognition as a fire fighter. The program allows recruit fire fighters to gain this recognition in the quickest means possible. The BFS program like the J & B Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills can be taught in blocks consisting of three hours, day long, and weekend or week long in-house academies. The BFS program is approximately 75 student contact hours and is recognized by BLS as compliant with the requirements for recognition to operate on the emergency scene inside a structure fire.
The Basic Pump Operation (BPO) course is derived from the IFSTA curriculum “Pumping Apparatus Driver Operator Handbook”. The basic course provides fire fighters with the knowledge, skills and experience to operator a fire pumper. The BPO course requires sixteen / twenty student contact hours and can be offered in four hour, eight hour - or full weekend sessions. This course is scheduled for to be reviewed. Restriction: 8 student maximum.
The Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC) utilized by MFTE was developed by the Volunteer Fire Insurance Service. VFIS The EVOC curriculum was updated in 2008 and MFTE has adopted the new curriculum. The course requires sixteen student contact hours split evenly between the classroom and the driving course. The EVOC course can be offered in four hour, eight hour or full weekend sessions.
