Curriculum & Certification

The MFT&E Curriculum and Certification division assists local and regional in-house academy programs to reach their fire training goals. Curriculum and Certification offers standardized written examinations using Performance Training Systems Inc. software that is designed to meet NFPA standards. Testing is offered at the completion of regional academies and fire attack schools.

Written examinations are also offered on a monthly basis at the Southern Maine Community College Headquarters in Howe Hall. Practical Skills End Tests required for certification as a Firefighter I & II are also scheduled through MFT&E Curriculum and Certification. Candidates must pre-register for all testing and are required to present various personal ID and qualifying documents.

Candidates successfully completing both the written and practical portions of exams are issued SMCC/MFT&E Certificates. Firefighters holding certificates from other state training agencies may submit them to MFT&E Curriculum and Certification for review. If all requirements have been met, reciprocity certificates will be issued from Maine (cost: $20.00 per review and issuance).

Pro Board

MFT&E is applying to the National Fire Protection Association Professional Qualifications Board to gain national accreditation standing. This involves a review of the testing and program procedures utilized by MFTE. Our application to the Pro Board has been submitted. Once the application has been reviewed, the Pro Board will establish a site visit with a review team. The site review will likely take place in October. The Pro Board accreditation review team will interview personnel, study existing policies and observe a Practical Skills End Test. When MFT&E receives recognition by the Pro Board, certificates will also include the Pro Board seal. This recognition will allow for easy transfer of certificates to and from the twenty-four states currently recognized by the Pro Board.
