Intro to MFT&E

Training & Education

MFT&E is a department of Southern Maine Community College with statewide responsibility for firefighter training and the legislative authority to issue state certification.

Funding provided by the state’s fire insurance premium tax and the federal government allows us to offer a limited program of hands-on and classroom-based training at no cost to Maine’s municipal fire–rescue departments.

We can also provide training on an at-cost basis for both public and private sector organizations. The free training for volunteer and municipal fire departments is allocated per county on an equitable basis by fair distribution and by population.

All that is required to request the free training is for the local fire chief to submit a Training Request Form.

Courses are performance-based, compliant with federal and state laws and regulations, and national fire training standards. The courses are taught by state certified fire instructors and offered in various formats to meet local needs.

The permanent staff of MFT&E is a mixture of full-time and part-time individuals, as well as a dedicated core of adjunct instructors hired on a per diem basis. All MFT&E staff are assigned to one of two regional offices–Bangor and South Portland.
