New J&B Skill Sheets

MFTE has received initial copies of the J &B Skills Workbook and applied the added skills included in the book to meet the matrix required by the NFPA ProBoard. In the initial printing of the J & B Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills I & II Maine Fire Training heard from many of you that there appeared to be several skills that were not covered in the J & B Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills I & II curricula. Jones & Bartlett listened to your concerns and responded by publishing a new comprehensive Skills Workbook that includes all 271 of skills required to be certified as a fire fighter. The new “SKILLS Workbook” meets the NFPA standard 1001 Fire Fighter requirements based on the 2002 edition. Click here for links to new skill sheets.

With the new J & B Skills Workbook in hand MFTE was able to provide the NFPA ProBoard Committee on Accreditation (COA) the proof that the MFTE Certification division could test every skill as required by the standard. Most of these skills were being taught by the authority having jurisdiction during their in – house training academies and the effect will not require much of a change by the program coordinators in order to include them in their training schedule.

MFTE plans to distribute the new J & B Skills workbook to all active employed SMCC fire instructors to use in their preparation, teaching and evaluation of the skills required to be acknowledged as a certified fire fighter. The Curriculum & Certification Program Manager's division has been very busy preparing a revised set of progress charts to meet the NFPA 1001 standard. The new progress charts list many objectives that have been identified by the MFTE Certification Program Manager as optional. These optional objectives, are not required to be taught and will not be tested by MFTE at any Practical Skills End Test. Because these optional objectives will strengthen the
knowledge, skills and abilities of the candidates we encourage the authority having jurisdiction and training program coordinators to consider inclusion of the optional skills as part of the fire fighter training.

The Jones & Bartlett Skills Workbook also includes approximately 60 new skills that were not included in the original Fundamentals of Fire Fighters Skills I & II curriculum. Most of these skills are in the areas of automobile extrication and hazardous materials response at the Operations level as recognized by NFPA and OSHA. All of these skills must be taught as part of the NFPA 1001 standard and will be eligible for testing at a Practical Skills End Test to meet NFPA ProBoard certification.
